  • Movie: The Wedding Party and the present-day Nigerian Cinemagoer

Movie: The Wedding Party and the present-day Nigerian Cinemagoer

    By Chilee Agunanna

I once interviewed Terry G, a Nigerian music artist, in his heydays sometime in 2010, after his song, “Free Madness”, was released or leaked, as he claimed, and he said: “Chilee, how do you think I will just put that kind of nonsense together and ask people to buy it as music, it’s just as I said in the song, the beat was for other people and I was just testing the microphone because production is not like MC where you will just say, hello hello to set the microphone, here you would have to do something for a stretch before you can get the settings right. That’s just what happened here and because of plenty shayo, I was carried away and sang a whole track.”

He went on to tell me that the Nigerian music public was not yet ready for meaningful lyrics in music. Nigeria, he said, was still a dancing society and no one really cared about the lyrics, it was just the beats that would make them dance and they were happy with it.

Nigeria seems to be at that stage in the movie sector at the moment, any cinema-quality offering with a simple storyline, star-power and comedy to make them laugh is enough to make it a good movie for now.

The Nigerian movie audience has wandered for long in the wilderness of Asaba, Onitsha, Lagos and other places where cast and crew are hastily assembled and low-budget home movies are churned out in large quantity with stock characters, cheap cameras and witchcraft, that any sense of quality from our movies is good for them.

Nigerians love Nigeria and no matter what happens, once there is quality from our locals, most of who have gone international and back, we will be very happy to patronize it. That has always been the Nigerian spirit.

Nigerian movies have long been challenged by the issue of funding and this in turn affected the quality of works produced in Nollywood. Comedy has always been bedrock of the Nigerian movie industry because with the very low budget of the movies, even the most common film tricks were difficult to accomplish and the success of the industry then rested on the sheer talents of the actors and they expressed this fully through comedy and drama.

Also the budgets of Nigeria movies were severely stunted in the past and the producers who controlled these movies were the marketers at Alaba who only wanted profit and were also afraid of piracy. Those days are virtually behind us now because gradually movies are going back to the professionals and the artists will have the chance to actually produce good art.

Nigeria had cinemas in the past but most of us never saw them, we only heard about them from our parents, just like we had movies and theatre before without really seeing them until “Living in Bondage” came out in 1991 and Nollywood, was born. The wedding party4

The new Nigerian cinema is here and the taste buds seem to favour comedy at the moment. A whole lot of good Nigerian movies are hitting the box office recently but none has been as commercially successful as The Wedding Party before it was AY’s 30 Days in Atlanta and its sequel, A Trip to Jamaica.

Quality is now more demanded by the audience, comedy is once again at the rescue and a storyline not demanding any major tricks like The Wedding Party, with star-quality of the dramatis personae, it was always going to be a success.

The Wedding Party is a romantic comedy that fulfills most of the needs of the present Nigerian cinemagoer. Its success is largely based on the quality of production and the star cast and crew whose fans and friends have hyped the movie into the stratosphere. It is a simple storyline that incorporates a number of serious messages and issues along with the party atmosphere. There is the clash of cultures between the Yoruba and Igbos; the promotion of local dishes above cozy expensive ones; the abandoned Nigerian graduate and so on.

The movie is about wedding and reception story of an Igbo boy, Dozie Onwuka (Banky W) and Dunni Coker (Adesua Etomi), a Yoruba girl. The funny inter-tribal clashes that could have occurred during such event from the beginning of the ceremony to the end. Within this were issues of unfaithfulness both for Dozie and his father, Chief Felix Onwuka (Richard Mofe-Damijo). There is the snobbish attitude of Lady Obianuju Onwuka (Iretiola Doyle) to the perceptibly loud and seemingly uncultured attitude of Dunni’s family. Dunni’s mother, Tinuade Coker is played by Sola Sobowale while the father, Bamidele Coker is played by veteran comedian, Ali Baba.WeddingParty02

The cast, which cuts across the major entertainment genres of Nigeria—actors, comedians and musicians, means that the appeal base was spread across the fans of these stars. Also the heavyweight production team of Ebonylive Films, Film One Distribution, Inkblot Production and Koga Studios and the direction of Kemi Adetiba, a New York University-trained filmmaker who has so far directed only music videos in Nigeria, should be also be counted towards the success of this movie. It further buttresses the fact that films are returning to the professionals instead of the Alaba marketers who were only after profit.

While the claims of open casting can count for some of the members, Zaina’s job at Ebonylive, Banky and Adesua’s act in his video “Made for You” would have definitely swayed things in their favour. Zaina is excellent in her role and to me her discovery is one of the highlights of the movie and I hope to see her again on a movie screen.

There are no complicated plot twists, but like I said, that’s not what the movie aims to achieve, it just wants to provide quality laughter different from the bombastic characters of the Osuofia and Jaguar. In fact the serious scenes are somehow wished away to make way for the laughter sections and this is provided in ample episodes of the movies. This at the moment satisfies the Nigerian audience and as we proceed to appreciate good movies, the stakes would continue to be raised on all fronts.

  • The shape of the new Biafra

The shape of the new Biafra

    By Chilee Agunanna

At the risk of sounding vulgar, I wish to apply this Igbo proverb here: “Kinsmen are like the hairs around the anus, they can neither be shaved nor pulled.” The Igbos fighting for Biafra are like those hairs, they are going about it the wrong way for now and dying unnecessarily, but they are our kinsmen and we cannot disown them, rather we can tell them not to die in vain like they are doing, because they are not doing anyone any good.

At the right time and in due course, their style of the struggle will be needed but it is not at this moment. We also say in Igboland that, “In a wealthy man’s house, all kinds of characters abound—the strong, the weak, the loud, the meek, the violent and the peaceful, the honest and the thieves….” So whichever way you want to fight for Biafra, your skills will be needed, it’s just for you to await the right time and place.

At the moment, if you want to use violence in the struggle, follow the example of Apostle Johnson Suleiman, preach it, shout it, threaten it, but never go outside in the name of any demonstration because you will only be canon fodder for trigger happy soldiers and policemen ordered to kill you and no matter how unfair, unjust and unlawful your death is, you can never resurrect. You do not have two lives where you can use one to fight and die for the struggle and use the other to live and enjoy Biafra when it comes. You only have one and we need you to be alive whenever Biafra is achieved.

There is always a time to defend and attack and now is the time for defence. Let us first defend ourselves from the Fulani Herdsmen rampaging about and killing our people instead of wasting our lives in demonstrations shouting for Biafra. It is better to die while defending yourself than to place yourself in the path of unnecessary danger through demonstrations.

You should even worry about the quality of the people that kill you. A comedian once joked that he would prefer to be jammed by someone driving a Hummer Jeep than one driving a Keke. It is people you have labeled animals that are killing you and you are answering a messiah or sacrifice. Messiah for who? Sacrifice for what? What do you gain from that?

Biafra does not need that type of sacrifice at the moment; if you have to die, you have to die honourably and your death has to count towards something and statistics have to at least capture you. These days we hardly know the correct figure of people that are killed, the numbers are usually disputed and coupled with that the soldiers and police usually deny killing anyone, so why die when no one will admit to killing you and your number won’t even be reflected in the data?

We need everyone alive for the struggle. If you see they are shooting people, run away because he who fights and runs away, lives to fight another day. Don’t die struggle now, we need people to live for the struggle. That is the current situation.Biafra people

The way to the new Biafra is through self and nation building. Develop yourself and get ready to play a part, develop your land and your people, train them, help them and give them good governance if you are in a position of power.

In fact we already have Biafra but we do not realize it; we do not cherish it; we betray it; we steal from it; we cheat on it; we kill it.

The East is already Biafra but we do not nurture it because of the selfish and stealing leaders we have in Igboland. How can we realize Biafra when a governor uses the people’s money to erect Christmas Trees while slashing the salaries of workers and pensioners and still not paying them the rest? How can we realize Biafra when a governor has turned the state government to his own family’s business and we do nothing about it? How can we realize Biafra when a governor instead of paying his people decides to deceive them with a fake and non-existent airline?

Or do we talk about Biafra in Enugu State, the original capital of Biafra where Ugwuanyi ran to Abuja to laugh and pose for pictures with Buhari when his people had been massacred? How can we have Biafra when after the massacre, Ugwuanyi welcomes the Sultan of Sokoto with fanfare and praise instead of expressing anger and threatening retaliation for the death of his people just like El Rufai threatened that the Fulanis would in this 2012 tweet: “We write this for all to read. Anyone, soldier or not that kills the Fulani takes a loan repayable one day no matter how long it takes.”

Where is this where instead of patronizing Innoson Motors who is right there with us, they are still buying Toyota and BMW cars? Where is this Biafra my people?

We cannot have Biafra until we develop Igboland and make it Biafra. Nothing is holding us from making sure the leaders of Igboland lead honestly and accountably.

What we need to do now is to strategize and elect humane leaders for Igboland who can develop our land; people who will not eat our collective share of the “National Cake” alone, only then we can take a step forward and say we are Biafra before demanding for Biafra from anybody we accuse of holding it.

Note: While writing this article, I also saw one by the Areafada, Charly Boy, titled: “Let us pause on the fantasy tagged Biafra for now” which expressed most of the same sentiments in my piece in a better way.

February 12, 2017 was a Triple-Threat Saturday in Houston as the Umu Igbo Unite Houston Chapter (UIU Houston) held three excellent events across the city. The first was an Afrobeats dance workout session at Creative Workouts Gym and the afternoon featured an Igbo Language Class.
But the highlight of the day was Single Mingle and Date Auction- an occasion that afforded single ladies and gentlemen of the organization and guests an opportunity to hookup. While the focus was on bachelors and spinsters, married couples also participated since the event was to raise funds in support of charities and other UIU-Houston events.                                                                                           Funds collected from the events will go towards the UIU-Houston banquet and the UIU Cares Charity that will benefit Nigerian causes such as Motherless Babies Homes, battered women, windows and scholarships.
On June 24, 2017, The UIU-Houston Banquet will hold in Houston and promises to be one of the most memorable events of the summer. You can purchase your tickets on EventBrite. #UIUHOUSTONBANQUET2017

  • Skiibii’s death stunt: A post-mortem – By Chilee Agunanna

    Skiibii’s death stunt: A post-mortem – By Chilee Agunanna

I wrote this article two years ago after Skiibii faked his death in attempt to “blow” and pointed out that there were some fundamental disfunctionalities at Five Star Music. The current debacle with Harrysong only confirms those facts. I hereby represent the article which was first published on www.thenet.ng.

So many times I have been invited to a strategy session for an artiste trying to gain a massive traction of publicity during the release of their work. So many times I have asked them the same question, `What do you really want to achieve with this action? Is this for the long or short term and how do you want to be regarded for the rest of your career? What persona do you want to portray?’

These are some fundamental questions artistes and their strategists always need to answer before they embark on any publicity drive. But unfortunately most of them hardly consider these and most only consider the short term.

Good publicity costs money and takes a period to crystalise but bad news sells fast and spreads like wildfire at absolutely no cost. And when you establish your publicity through bad news and pranks, your stories will sell quite alright and people will recognise you, but how they recognise you matters. You end up being notorious instead of popular or famous. And this affects the rest of your career.

The King of Pop, Michael Jackson, once claimed that he slept in a hyperbaric oxygen chamber and had Bubbles, a chimpanzee, as his best friend and roommate at some point. It earned him the name `Wacko Jacko’ from the press, and he regretted the stunt for the rest of his life.

Those were days when the traditional press solely controlled news and publicity but these are the days of the Social Media and while the traditional press remains a force in the formation of public opinion, the public are much closer to news and quickly form opinions without any guidance or recourse to the press.

There are countless blogs littered all over the web sphere copying one another or exclusively breaking whatever news they find on the social media pages of celebrities from the confines of their rooms. And once one a story shows up on one blog, the others duplicate it and in no time, the story is everywhere. The public swallow up these stories up and comments flow like water on the more popular blogs.

Sometime ago I had the cause to write about May D and his claim of buying a house for N150 million naira in Magodo Phase 2, Lagos, after he sent out emails with pictures of the building to blogs to publish. The blogs obliged him without bothering to crosscheck or investigate the story.

There is a problem with how these young artistes trying to gain a strong footing in the industry perceive themselves. Sending out an email to announce your lifestyle which has no direct relation to your work or talent is absurd. It shows that you have come to regard yourself as a very important person who the public must be dying to know about without putting in the work.

If the first thing you do when a 22-year-old young man is collapsed and dying is to take his pictures and send out to blogs, then you really need your head examined.

People hide sickness, they don’t broadcast it. When you start broadcasting sickness that means it’s a designer sickness and nothing is actually wrong with you. You just need attention but there are so many better stunts to pull than death.

There seems to be a fundamental management issue with the people of Five Star Music. Even the statement they release afterwards is ridiculous. These people confirmed Skiibii dead without going to the hospital and immediately started mourning him and getting the whole country to mourn with them. What about Skiibii’s parents and immediate family? Were they in on this too or did you also lead his family into thinking their son was dead just for publicity?

    Harrysong
    Harrysong

Harrysong once claimed that his parents were siblings without realising that makes him a taboo child and unacceptable in any human culture. KCee publicly denied his wife and child and claimed he was never married. What kind of dumb publicity stunts are these?

We thank God for Skiibii’s life. No one wishes him dead but he should leave that room where they have tied him up with wires and one small cylinder of oxygen and get back to the studio. There might still be redemption for his career if he can simply focus on making good music.
